1. Be patience.
You can’t master your craft from day one. Don’t worry when your first jewelleries aren’t perfect. No one started out as a brilliant jewelry designer. We all need to learn and that takes time. Years. Don’t stress about it, know that you’ll get better day after day.
2. Be persistent.
To really get better, you need to be persistent. It doesn’t help when you make jewelleries twice a year. If you create them day after day, you will improve, discover and get better. You will discover new techniques, tips & tricks – but for that, you need to do. It’s easy to create one or two jewelleries but to become really successful, you need persistence.
“Patience, persistence, and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.” – Napoleon Hill
3. Test constantly.
There’s a chance that you don’t know what kind of jewelleries you like to create. To get to know your passion and taste, test day after day. Try new materials. Research about new techniques and try them. Test new tools. Test new colors. Let yourself free and discover what you like to do and wear, what others like and what sells. Be opened to different ideas and opinions.
4. Do not try to be perfect.
It’s impossible to create 100% perfect handmade jewelleries from start. Better do more. Do not try to be so perfect, especially at the beginning. Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Learn and adjust while you do – this way you will improve faster and same time, other’s can discover your passion too (maybe you can even sell some of your jewelleries)!
“Instead of trying to make your life perfect, give yourself the freedom to make it an adventure, and go ever upward”. – Drew Houston
5. Ask feedback.
Your opinion is only one opinion. If you create a piece of jewelry to someone, ask feedback. Ask what they like and more importantly, what they don’t like. Ask what you can do differently. Ask what other jewelleries they would like. Ask what inspires them. Feedback can be so valuable if you just ask for it!
6. Show your work.
Like with feedback, you need to be active. Do not be afraid, show others your work (fairs, Facebook page, homepage, Instagramm etc.). Show what you have created. Many beginners (I did the same mistake) tend to keep their creations for themselves, while many people would love to see (and buy) that kind of jewelleries. And of course, if you start showing your work more, you have a chance to collect more feedback.
7. Start cheap.
You don’t need a lot of money to start creating and designing your own jewelleries. Start with pencil and paper when sketching your ideas. Start with cheaper materials when you create your first products. You can level up your materials when you get better. Do not find excuses.
8. You don’t need all tools.
Many beginners make a lot of excuses. They do not start because they don’t have the right tools and machines. You don’t need them. Be creative. Use things that you already have. Do not let some excuses stop you from beginning/creating. There are so many tools that you can replace with things from your home.
9. Love what you do – enjoy the process!
And finally, love what you do. It’s hard to be patience if you do not enjoy the process – learning, trying, selling, creating, thinking etc. Know that you will improve every day. Know that you are doing a great work. And best is yet to come 🙂
“The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination.” – Carl Rogers
Stay elegant! 😉
